World Tourism Day.

Every year on September 27, World Tourism Day gives us the opportunity to recognize the importance of a sector that is a key part of the Greek economy and, at the same time, creates thousands of jobs.

When we speak of tourism, we usually think of destinations, hotels, restaurants, attractions, and travel experiences. Yet, behind every positive visitor experience lie the people.

Staffing as one of the sector’s major challenges

In recent years, tourism and hospitality businesses have faced a significant challenge: finding and retaining skilled staff. Staffing is no longer limited to simply filling a vacancy; businesses are seeking professionals who are eager to grow within dynamic environments focused on guest satisfaction.

On the other hand, employees also have different expectations regarding a professional opportunity. They seek an environment characterized by communication, proper organization, and attractive remuneration.

This is precisely where the greatest challenge for recruitment lies: establishing the right connection between a company’s needs and a candidate’s expectations.

We aren’t just looking for resumes. We are looking for the right match.

In the tourism sector, a CV cannot always capture everything an individual has to offer, as for the majority of positions, candidates are evaluated based on their customer-centric approach and their ability to respond promptly.

Experience is important. However, personality, a collaborative spirit, adaptability, and a drive for professional growth are equally significant. A candidate starting in an entry-level position today can, with the right guidance and appropriate opportunities, evolve into a future hospitality industry leader.

That is why the selection of personnel in the tourism sector requires a more substantive perspective: looking not only at what someone has achieved to date, but also at their future potential.

Investing in people means investing in the visitor experience.

A business may boast excellent facilities, a prime location, or a very strong brand. However, the ultimate customer experience is still largely shaped by the team on the front lines every day.

That is why attracting and selecting people should not be viewed merely as a staffing process; it is an investment in the quality and growth of the business. On the occasion of World Tourism Day, it is therefore worth turning our attention not only to economic figures, destinations, and attractions, but—above all—to the people behind the processes.

Because, at the end of the day, the best travel experiences are created by people who love what they do and by businesses that know how to find, develop, and retain them within their teams.
